50th Anniversary of the Henley-on-Todd Regatta at Alice Springs

If you are planning a trip to the Australian outback this summer, why not time your arrival to catch the Henley-On-Todd Regatta which will take place on the 20th August 2011 in Alice Springs?

Celebrating its 50th Anniversary it’s the single longest running event in Australia’s Outback Northern Territory, where contestants come from far and wide to race up the dry Todd River bed in bottomless ‘eights’,’oxford tubs’, ‘bath tubs’ and yachts through the deep course sand to the finish line.

The Henley-On-Todd Regatta was founded in 1962 by Reg Smith who wanted to create Australia’s own version of the Henley Regatta. The fact that there was no sign of water for 1,500km didn’t faze Reg or the Rotary Club of Alice Springs, who helped bring the concept to fruition.

Tickets are priced at: Adult: AUS$15 (£10), Children (aged 4 -14) AUS$5 (£3), Family (2 adults, 3 children): AUS$30 (£20) and all proceeds from the event are allocated to local, national and international humanitarian projects.
